There’s a gratefulness ritual among a couple of bloggers I read. Ariane from Ariane’s little world started it and Jay from Two Women Blogging picked it up. Every day (or thereabouts) they write a short post about something for which they are grateful.
I think it’s a great idea, asking ourselves to contemplate and affirm the good in our lives. As social justice activists, we invest so much in righting the wrongs of the world. I like to take the time to acknowledge all the magnificent work we’ve been doing, and this beautiful world we are working so hard to improve, and simply the small pleasant things in our lives. I thought you and I should try the gratitude exercise, if only just the once. So, here’s mine:
I am grateful for communities of dedicated women who support each other and work for social justice.
What are you grateful for today?

White wine.
Dark chocolate.
The fact I have a partner who can and does cook and will not kill the child when left alone with him for twenty minutes (even if he does let him eat my expensive make-up stash and random buttons from the crafting pile).
Many women don’t have even that. Many women don’t have any of these. So I’m grateful for them.

I am grateful for the opportunity to complete all my assignments for this semester, and for the fact that I am very close to finishing my Masters.
I am grateful that I currently have a lifestyle that allows me to both earn money in a job I believe makes a(n environmental) difference, and volunteer for an organisation that I believe makes a (social justice) difference.

Gotta say, now that it is over I am thankful for Halloween. The kids managed such a huge score I’ll be eating free candy for months to come. Of course this will happen on the sly because I don’t want to traumatize them with the knowledge that the price for dragging me around the neighborhood in the freezing cold is all the chocolate I can eat. :)

- Supportive and friendly people on my course who don’t think the idea of me investigating women in SF fandom is excessively odd.
- Streaming telly on demand (Heston Blumenthal! Jamie Oliver! Merlin!)
- Being able to sleep in tomorrow.

Am grateful to have family, my mum and dad, my sister and brothers, niece and nephew and fiancee. It’s a blessing to have them in my life, people i know i can count on no matter what. To have a home to go to when the world turns it’s back on me. people i can cry and laugh with, people who are close to my heart Family makes you matter, it completes you. unfortunately many take it for granted.
