Supposedly, feminists
Hate men/Want to be men
Are soulless/Are bleeding hearts
Aren’t feminine enough to be taken seriously/Are too feminine to be taken seriously
But, actually, women are
Vulnerable (so you should stay inside!)
Varied (so we can’t talk about all your issues!)
Voracious (you want too much too fast!)
You can’t win.
When everything’s split, when you have to pick one or the other to stay true or stay afloat, choose everything. Take up your soul and your bleeding heart. Go with femininity and masculinity in ways that sustain you. Be vulnerable, and varied, and voracious. Pursue the kinds of love you want. This is the fundamental thing.
Be wonderful. I wish you well.
And so say all of us. Thank you. Variety is all.
yes.
Chally, I am guessing you noticed my response to our friend Max Tomlinson. I also wrote about sameness is not the same as equality. http://teamoyeniyi.com/2012/03/31/equality-does-not-mean-sameness/
I certanly consider myself a feminist to the extent I believe and will damn well fight tooth and nail for equality. I’m just not about to burn my bra, nor do I hate men. Actually, I’ve been on a bit of an equality/feminist theme this month, a little off-topic for me!
Lovely post.
I hadn’t, actually! The bra burning was a myth that a few people took on afterwards because it had become so fixed in the popular imagination. And feminism really really isn’t about hating men.
Some did actually do it! Symbolism only. I know feminism isn’t about hating men (personally, I love ‘em) but Mad Max seemed to be on a role!
I’ve not seen it!
Not sure if you mean Max for the bras – I’m assuming you mean Max? http://teamoyeniyi.com/2012/04/18/dear-max/
On that note – I’m off to cook tea for my starving hoards! Essendon lost – not a good day.
Sorry, I’m clearly not doing the best with brain things today, I totally thought you meant the film.
