Our little piggies are doing just fine too, or at least, I think they are. They have been at the guinea piggery (like a cattery or a dog boarding kennel) for the last few weeks, staying in a hutch and a run that are palatial. They will probably feel quite hard done by when we reclaim them in a week or so.

Your two look very happy. And how sweet of Cardamom to put her paw in your hand.

Thank you Chally. I have, and have always had, problems with Anzac Day and Christopher Pyne made me say some unfortunate things this week.
We seem as a nation/culture very bad at recognising the sacrifices made by people other than our 'brave diggers'. The casualities of war made by accident of location and/or nationality. And, as you say, our selective recognition of heroes. Bah.
And of course not only were the indigenous servicemen not recognised on their return they didn't receive (to the best of my knowledge) the financial assistance that other returned servicemen did. And don't get me started on the issue of women in war, women affected by war...

I wish victims of war and conflict would get more acknowledgement.

(And thanks! I have so many posts I want to write but, oh dear, writing times seems to get absorbed by my thesis. I wrote this on another train today during time I had allocated to my thesis.)

This very neatly captures some of the issues I have with Anzac day, issues and questions which I learned a long time ago were not acceptable to voice. The historical and emotional manipulation, the blind nationalism, the tendency to glorify the actions of a select few over the widespread consequences of war and international conflict. And the failure to engage with any criticism, because to criticise the legend is 'unaustralian.'

Perhaps it's my German heritage and a perspective of the German response to the second world war that makes me think about this differently. But I feel distinctly uncomfortable around Anzac day, because I feel like the messages I'd like to see highlighted (that war is horrible and affects EVERYONE) seem to get swallowed up. Thanks for posting this, it's lovely to see you writing again. :)
