In case you were wondering why on Earth I have a picture of a tree up there, the hollow is meant to symbolise zeroness at the boneness. I’m changing the header in a few days, so I thought I’d make a tribute to that which is passing. So here are some of the photos I took on that exploratory walk to try and find the perfect hollow. Alas I never did find a tree stump, but I did find that lovely branch. I’ll take a screencap to ward off nostalgia. You can find the rest of the photos at my Flickr account. I find looking at trees calming, don’t you?

Looking through the trees

Looking up at the sky

I made this through Wordle.net. I seem to recall having initially found out about Wordle through Justine Larbalestier’s site, but I could be wrong. The idea is that you plug in a piece of writing and it sorts through them by popularity to make something pretty.

I just like how hey’re grouped; it’s quite amusing. Look at ’sex’ between ’something’ and ‘comments’. I have to write about sex more to beef it up! I like that ‘women’ and ‘people’ are so prominent. I wonder what that signifies? And above feminism: ‘perhaps’ ‘used’ ‘better’. Quite. To the right of that: ‘write’ ‘long’ ‘blogs’. Picky, aren’t you? ‘New’ ‘world’ ‘Female’ up the top is optimistic. The wordle. It tells us things. ‘Something’ ‘going’ ‘even’ ‘now:’ how vague. ‘Go justice back time’ might be connected to the prominent ‘doctor’. As for ‘post’ ‘always,’ this thing apparently likes my blog! ‘Come good human people’ um okay. I so like looking for word patterns in things!

I joined Flickr recently, mostly to have a place to store photos for this blog. Look at all the feminist photos I found!

Feminism is spoken here, uploaded by gaelx.

More feminism signs, uploaded by chebbs.

5 Things Feminism Has Done For Me, uploaded by jenlemen. (I’m afraid I can’t stick it here in the blog, so I’m just linking. Her stuff looks gorgeous!)
Image description: In a beautiful artistic layout with a leaf, a sun, hearts and eyes instead of ‘I’:
‘Five fantastic things feminism has done for me:
‘1. Feminism gave me Women Studies. Without Alice Walker, Zora Neale Hurston & Virginia Woolf, I wouldn’t be here today.
‘2. Feminism gave me the language to explain why I need to be connected to my body and why choice is essential for me.
‘3. Feminism gave me the vote. One of the 1st times I made a very scandalous decision. (really.)
‘4. Feminism helped me value the kind of wisdom, power and politics that grows from the bottom up.
‘5. Feminism grew in me the dream of an egalitarian marriage – with my own true love Dave Lemen. (it’s true).’

Yes we can.

A few things by way of visual representation and feminism have come up lately, so I’m blogging about them collectively.

Go look at Feministing’s Fun with Feminist Flickr (Australian graffiti edition). WOO!

And read Liss’ very insightful post, Barack the Feminist, which is about the controversial Ms. cover that just hit the blogosphere. I don’t know how she keeps slogging away at it; this post is gold.

Lastly, go look at Sociological Images, which is a very good site with much feminist content.

It was my birthday on the 16th and, nostalgia lover as I am, I decided to include a couple of children’s games at my birthday party. From somewhere in some cupboard there emerged a pin the tail on the donkey set. In the corner were listed the rules.

I’ll quote the relevant part:

Give one tail to each player. He must remember the number on the tail given him. Blindfold each player in turn, and whirl him about once or twice. Then he must step for-ward on the first place he touches. He must only use one hand.

But we couldn’t have that.

Feminist rules for pin the tail on the donkey

Image description: There are handwritten amendments to the rules. ‘Feminist’ has been added in front of ‘Rules for Playing;’ ‘he’ and ‘him’ have been changed to ‘they’ and ‘them;’ ‘Booby prize is for the one who pinned the tail furthest away’ has been crossed out.

A small act of feminism, all in a day’s work.
